Case Study: Union City, Pa


The Union City, Pa Water Treatment Plant was looking to improve the quality of its finished water while at the same time minimizing the costs of their chemicals used.   The WTP was feeding ferric chloride at a dosage of 115 ml/minute, an anionic polymer used as a coagulant aid and a cationic polymer used as a filter aid.


Applied Specialties, Inc’s technical representative performed one year of jar testing with the ferric polymer blend, AS-2820.  The year of jar testing was done to ensure that AS-2820 would perform under various raw water characteristics such as cold and warm water with differing raw water turbidities and various organic loadings.  The raw water source for Union City is an open reservoir and at times can have a high concentration of natural organic matter (NOM).


The trial with AS-2820 began in late October of 2012.  Within one day of AS-2820 use, there was a 25% reduction in treatment dosage.  One month later, AS-2820 was feeding at approximately 32% less dosage than the previous ferric chloride.  With the reduced dose, there was a dramatic reduction in chemical sludge production.  The previously required anionic and cationic polymers were no longer needed and were discontinued. The finished water turbidities are running between 0.04 and 0.06 NTU.  The AS-2820 has exceeded the expectations of the water plant personnel.
